The Hawthorns

Hawthorns, our registered home in Baxenden, Lancashire, provides care and accommodation for up to two children of any gender aged 7-17. The home supports children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties through bespoke, holistic care and a nurturing environment. Hawthorns is a 2-bedroom home, designed to maintain a family-like atmosphere while ensuring safety through minimal necessary adaptations such as alarms and surveillance.

A large living room, fully equipped kitchen, conservatory, and spacious bedrooms make Hawthorns a warm, nurturing environment.

Staff are valued for their skills and are given structured roles, fair compensation, and opportunities for feedback. The organisation ensures a positive, respectful environment for both children and staff. Hawthorns House fosters a culture of respect and non-discrimination, valuing children’s unique cultural, religious, and linguistic identities.

Child-Centered Care

The primary goal is the safety, well-being, and individual development of each child. Care is tailored to each child’s needs, promoting positive behaviours, personal growth, and independence.

Individualised Support

Children receive bespoke care plans that prioritise their health, education, and emotional well-being. Support includes personal development, behavioural management, and strategies to address trauma or other challenges.

Education

Children’s educational needs are prioritised. The home works closely with schools and other professionals to ensure children have access to the resources they need to succeed academically.

Family and Social Connections

Family contact is encouraged, where safe and appropriate, to maintain and strengthen children’s sense of identity and belonging.

Facilities

Hawthorns has a welcoming, family-like atmosphere. It includes spacious bedrooms, communal areas, and a large garden. Safety features like fire doors, window restrictors, and CCTV are in place, but efforts are made to keep the environment homely.

Operational Approach

The home operates 24/7 with staffing levels adjusted according to the needs of the children. Staff are trained in various mandatory areas, including safeguarding, first aid, de-escalation techniques, and physical intervention.

Holistic Care

The home aims to meet the full range of needs for each child, from health and education to emotional and social development. Children are encouraged to participate in the home’s activities and to contribute to its upkeep, fostering a sense of responsibility.

Inclusive Environment

Children are encouraged to express their views and make decisions about their care. Family meetings and key worker sessions are regularly held to involve children in their care planning.

Leadership

Clare Harris (Responsible Individual): Over 20 years of residential childcare experience, including management roles with consistent “Good” and “Outstanding” Ofsted ratings.

Kurtis Sandlan (Registering Manager): Holds a BA in Education and Sports Science with over seven years in residential childcare, dedicated to transforming children’s futures through trauma-informed care.

Harwood House offers a supportive, safe, and nurturing environment where up to five children can thrive and develop their potential. The home prioritises the best interests of the child, with a focus on education, health, emotional well-being, and family connections.

Woodgrove is our registered care home located in Rosehill, Burnley. It accommodates up to four children who may have emotional or behavioural difficulties. The six-bedroom home is designed to blend into its residential setting, with spacious interiors and a wrap-around garden.

Located in Salford, Manchester, Redbrick House emphasises a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment to help up to two children achieve their potential. Each child has a personalised bedroom, with warm inviting communal spaces and a back garden for outdoor activities.

A semi-detached house designed to blend into the residential area. Salford Heights offers a warm and nurturing environment for up to two children. This home aims to provide a safe, loving, and happy environment for children to thrive and reach their potential.

Located in Bacup, Lancashire, Bentley House offers a safe, nurturing, and family-like environment aimed at fostering children’s personal growth and independence. Bentley can provide accommodation for up to three children with personalised bedrooms and communal spaces.
